Its highly likely you will have already read the warnings that Apple are dropping support for QuickTime, more importantly we will be receiving no more security updates for QuickTime on Windows systems. Search anywhere online and the most common advice is to run as far as you can from this potential hackers RSVP. This is a perfectly acceptable solution for most users and there are loads of free alternatives to QuickTime but for the post production industry, more specifically the majority of Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools users this is not a reasonable workaround.

Sony ODA Gen2 advancements and integration with other solutions.

Sony has recently announced the new generation of optical disk cartridges for their Optical Disk Archive (ODA) systems. There is a big jump in the longevity of the medium, read/write speeds, and size of cartridges. The new cartridges offer a lifetime of 100 years – compared to the 50 of LTO technology – read/write speeds have doubled to 2Gbps read and 1 Gbps write, and capacity has increased to 3.3 TB for Gen2 ODA cartridges. Other advantages are backward compatibility of new generation drives with older cartridges, which means that no generational migrations will be needed in the future, the fact that optical discs do not wear out when being constantly used in comparison to LTO tapes, random access of data, and the use of UDF system of recording data to discs.

Belfast production and post-production facility Ka-boom has installed a Baselight ONE grading suite with Slate control panel to add to its existing Baselight for Avid plugins. Initial grading projects for movies and documentaries led to Ka-boom winning the finish on a major new BBC entertainment show, Can’t Touch This, which called for all the efficiencies as well as the creative power of Baselight and its interaction with Baselight for Avid.
