Why I Joined Tyrell – Adam Lewiston

My Father was a Precision Engineer for Kodak in London, and it was always presumed that I would work in a similar job, but I was always really into movies, and as a kid can vividly remember the experience of seeing Star Wars when I was 4, Dad sneaked us into the cinema, he was always a big Star Wars fan!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE INDUSTRY?

Having a career in film was just a fantasy for me, so I made a very realistic application for a culinary course in West Herts College and was offered a place.

Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver were becoming well known at that time and it seemed like a good idea, but when they told me that I needed a haircut I had second thoughts. I had long hair back then, so I decided a career as a Chef was not for me. Here’s a picture of me from that time, I was a very pretty boy!

My girlfriend at the time told me about a Media & Production Management Degree in the same college and I ended up taking my first steps towards working in Media Production, graduating from that course in 1994.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

After University, getting your career started is one of those harsh realities, and to get experience I worked as a runner at CCTV/Hillside Studios, which was funded by The Rank Organisation.

Working at MetroBroadcast was my first real job, where I worked as a Broadcast Engineer, becoming the Demo-Artist for the company, which I really enjoyed because I was meeting customers and showing them how the product actually worked.

Following on from that I joined a Production Company called ORTV where I worked as the facilities manager, which gave me an excellent familiarity with different types of cameras for TV productions.

This led me to a role as the facilities manager at Crow TV Post Production, where I was designing Editsuites and Workflows, whilst making sure staff were properly trained.

WHAT TYPE OF WORK ARE YOU BEST KNOWN FOR?

Managing Production Systems has turned out to be my key skill, and before joining Tyrell I worked as a Pre-Sales and Workflow Specialist  for Root6.

Production Budgets are being consistently cut, and many production houses are bringing back work to be finished in-house, which leads to the question:

‘How do I improve my production budgets?’

Knowing how to help clients overcome the challenges of working within a limited budget is key to my role in Tyrell, and because I’ve always been closely involved in Media Production, I’m well positioned to offer an industry overview for particular projects.

WHY DID YOU JOIN TYRELL?

Working with Bryan Malone (MD of Tyrell) was the deciding factor, coupled with my strong commitment to customer service which is integral to Bryan’s values, and reflected in all aspects of the Tyrell approach to business.

Empowerment is a word we use frequently and people in the business are allowed to just get on with the job, I think I would even be allowed to grow my hair again, but my wife has the final say.
