IBC 2017 – The Tyrell Take

The 5 day event that is IBC in Amsterdam has closed for another year. Despite the heavy rain, the very busy schedule, late nights, early morning, we return exhausted, but enthusiastic about the months or next year ahead.
We caught up with lots of existing relationships and definitely started some new one, USA, Israel & Spain to name a few we listened and witnessed the constant evolution, as everyone pointed upwards to the cloud that the industry is about to embrace, everyone with a slightly different flavour of course, that on paper should be able to collaborate.
Clear-Com – Eclipse HX family

The general purpose of a professional intercom system is to facilitate simple to complex communication setups for few to thousands of users who need to be continuously on talk and/or listen mode.
Clear-Com has long been recognised as a leader in Broadcast and live performance Applications, but also extending to Military, Aerospace and Government, not to mention Commercial communications infrastructure, including Cruise ships, Teaching hospitals, University Campus, Multiple Corporate Offices and Stadia/Arena.
Production teams from all over the world have used Clear-Com’s intercom systems for its clarity, reliability, and scalability in various application settings.
Avid Broadcast Virtual Sets

There seemed be a colour scheme in hall 7 as well as many other halls at IBC and that colour was well and truly green. It was very easy for those wearing green at the show to simply disappear such was frequency of virtual sets, a great trick when trying to escape an overzealous sales pitch. Avid’s redesigned stand was one of the few stands not to have received the memo, however they were showing Avid Maestro|Virtual Set.
Maestro|Virtual Set is the canvas for creating a fully functional 3D studio environment.
Object Matrix

Object Matrix are one of the leading manufactures who have taken the Cloud Hardware generation and made it a reality. MatrixStore As A Service was released to bridge the expectation vs reality gap of cloud based storage.
Getting the data in the Cloud is easy, you just need a hard drive and a rocket – see what I did there? But often customers found that regaining access to their Cloud based storage was slow and extremely expensive.
The Object Matrix service can be used as a true Cloud based solution or a hybrid offering both onsite and offsite storage of your valuable data.
Blackmagic Design – Ultimatte 12

Blackmagic Design has established itself as a high quality innovative brand over the years. They have such an interesting product line from the rock solid I/O options to the simple to use ATEM studio production switchers.
This year at IBC their big announcement was for the Ultimatte 12.
Ultimatte has been around a long time (over 40 years) but Blackmagic acquired the company over a year ago and has been hard at work to achieve this new product which meets the customers expectations both on a technology and a cost level.
HP – New Z Series Announced – Wearable VR PC

In the content creation market HP are forging ahead with innovative and new ideas to meet the ever demanding needs of the market.
With the increase in use of VR and AR along with 4K and 8K , it becomes more important than ever to build systems that can be scaled to meet the processing needs.
New Z Series Announced
The Z series have been satisfying these needs for some years now and the new versions have just been announced.
Sonnet Technologies

Sonnet specialise in the extra bits you need to make your Macs/PCs that bit more useful.
In the age of adaptors for Macs, Sonnet provides that extra connectivity wrapped in clever well thought out enclosures.
New Products
GPU Expansion Boxes
Want to take advantage of the new GPUs out there? then get a Sonnet eGFX Breakaway box and use a GTX1080 or similar card with for example resolve to speed up your Transcoding on set or in house.
Vidispine IBC 2017

If you visited the Vidispine stand at IBC you probably wondered what do they sell or what service do they supply?
To be honest it’s tough to understand even for a geek like me, but when you get your head around it, it’s no surprise that they were short listed as part of the ITV Phoenix for the IBC innovation award. Their technology is visionary and their new cloud based product – Vidinet is revolutionary.
Vidispine, to quote their CTO is a headless MAM.
TeraDici – All Access

Virtualisation, Cloud services, Zero clients, Centralisation.
Nearly every buzz word on all that literature you’ve brought back from IBC this year at some point will involve a product like Teradici. You’ve been told how all your Media Composers will be in a blade server and how Telestream and how Amazon Cloud can house and stream your media. But to get that media in front of the part of the chain that makes good programs, a talented editor and producer, you’re going to need Teradici’s help.
PC-over-IP, developed by Teradici, is the protocol that will allow you to house all your processing power in a central location and have users spanning sites over WAN networks with nothing more than a mobile phone sized client strapped to their monitors, all the while feeling like they have the power and speed of a noisy workstation at their feet.
Intinor – IP delivery

Intinor has a problem. Thankfully for someone working with the product in presales and support it’s not technical. In fact, it’s one of the most robust and flexible bits of IP infrastructure I’ve come across. The problem is that it does so much it’s hard to define where it should sit in the marketplace. The IBC headlines and press releases from Intinor have been muted, much like the hardware units the ingenious staff of this company sit there quietly, working hard without making too much of a fuss.
